What: Darwin Lake is a breathtaking exclusive wedding venue set in 10 acres of natural woodland. The perfect setting for a weekend or mid-week wedding break with accommodation for up to 110 guests on site. This beautiful village includes a private lake and lawns, the charming Darwin Hall and 17 four star, stone built cottages – all wonderfully decorated and each named after local, historical landmarks. Where: Hidden away in the very heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District, with rolling hills and pine forests. Just three miles from Matlock.

Weddings: They are licenced for civil wedding ceremonies and have two large function rooms within Darwin Hall, which can seat up to 130 people on either floor. You never have to leave!

Somersal Cottages

What: Somersal Cottages is the perfect rural retreat for a whole weekend of wedding fun! This venue has ample garden space for a large marquee or Tipi wedding, with accommodation for around 80 guests in 31 bedrooms. For smaller weddings, they can comfortably seat up to 40 guests without the need for a marquee.

Arrive at the venue on Friday afternoon, celebrate your wedding day on the Saturday and carry on the celebrations on Sunday with a lazy brunch or BBQ before returning home. This self catering venue allows you to do things your own way, in true Independent Wedding style.

Where: The cottages are situated in the small countryside village of Somersal Herbert in Derbyshire. Just a short stroll away from Somersal Church.

Weddings: Not licenced, but just a short walk away from the beautiful St Peter & St Blaise Church, or 15 minutes from Ashbourne Registration Office.

Rowheath Pavilion

Where: In the leafiest of leafy, tree-lined suburbs in South Birmingham. Easy for the M42 and equally for the City.

What: a wonderfully light, airy hall looking over open grass to a landscaped lake beyond.

Weddings: Great for a wedding reception and they will allow you to use Kemp & Kemp Catering too!

Where: Birmingham City Centre – Brindley Place in fact, one of the most ‘happening spots’ in the Midlands.

What: An art gallery with spaces you can hire for your wedding reception.

Weddings: Not licensed for the ceremony, but what a place for your reception!

Lord Leycester Hospital

Lord Leycester HospitalWhere: Central ancient Warwick, perched on the town walls in fact.

What: A superb complex of rambling medieval half-timbered buildings still functioning as almshouses but with a Guild hall and Great Hall for weddings and some great spaces for photographs.

Weddings: Both the Guild Hall and Great Hall are licensed for marriages.

Bishton Hall

bishton hallWhere: between Stafford and Rugeley in deepest Staffordshire. Just on the edge of Cannock Chase.

What: A private school in a huge old house.

Weddings: Licensed for weddings with plenty of space for marquees for the reception. Or you can use the school dining room for about 40 guests – there are adjacent kitchens.

We got married here and did just that and we loved it. Its all ivy-clad with fab gardens and 18th Century garden monuments for super pictures. We call it ‘faded glory’ – a wonderful venue.

Smallwood Manor

What: Large Victorian country house set in sweeping, immaculate grounds, now a prep school. Eat in the dining room and use the original forms and tables – so characterful.

Weddings: If you are a former a pupil or member of staff you can get married at Smallwood, otherwise, its available to the rest of us for receptions.

Erasmus Darwin House, Lichfield

What: A superb Georgian town house and museum. Its the Lichfield home of Erasmus Darwin, esteemed physician, poet, botanist and amongst other things, Charles Darwin’s grandfather. The house is set in a wonderful position with views across to Lichfield Cathedral and is surrounded by an 18th Century herb garden.

Stafford Cricket & Hockey Club

What: Two sites are available.. Clonterbrook Farm (Licensed for weddings) with the unique music Room and gallery for you to use, then just down the road the Clonter Opera.. lots of versatile spaces for your bigger reception. All furniture included, plus a big commercial kitchen for Kemp & Kemp Catering.

The site is (as the name suggests) an opera venue, so at times you may use the scenery  within your photographs – quite unique.
